Just Steps from Clico: Discover Rosebank’s Vibrant Art Scene This Winter

There’s a special energy in Rosebank this winter. The air is crisp, the jacarandas have shed their famous purple blooms, and the neighbourhood has settled into a rhythm that’s both cosmopolitan and intimate. It’s the perfect time to rediscover the art capital of Joburg—and we’re thrilled to have you just steps away from it all.

At Clico, we’ve always believed that a stay with us is about more than just a comfortable room. It’s about immersing yourself in the unique character of Rosebank. And right now, Rosebank’s art scene is buzzing with exciting exhibitions and events that we know our discerning guests will appreciate.

A Season of Significant Exhibitions

This winter, Rosebank’s galleries are presenting some particularly compelling shows. Just a short stroll from Clico on Sturdee Avenue, you’ll find yourself at the heart of this cultural energy.

Gallery Momo is currently hosting Indlela ibomvu, a powerful solo exhibition by Lusanda Ndita, the winner of Absa’s 2024 L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto award. This exhibition, which runs until 11 July 2026, explores themes of memory, migration, and inheritance through photography, printmaking, and collage. It’s a profound reflection on South African history that we highly recommend to anyone interested in contemporary visual art.

Also on the nearby Jan Smuts Avenue, Goodman Gallery and David Krut Projects continue to showcase a diverse range of South African and international artists in thoughtfully curated exhibitions. Their programming often changes, so there’s always something new to discover.

Keyes Art Mile: Your Cultural Hub

Of course, no discussion of art in Rosebank would be complete without mentioning Keyes Art Mile. This creative precinct is home to an incredible concentration of galleries, including the renowned Everard Read and Circa Gallery, as well as BKhz, all of which feature heavyweights of the South African contemporary art scene.

Recent developments have also seen the transformation of Gallery 1 at the Trumpet building, which has been upgraded to a museum-grade space with state-of-the-art lighting and climate control. It’s now better equipped than ever to showcase significant collections.

Plan Your Winter Visit: First Thursdays

If you’re planning a visit, we strongly suggest timing your stay to coincide with Keyes Art Night, held on the first Thursday of every month. On these evenings, the galleries along Keyes Avenue stay open late, and the area comes alive with a fusion of art, design, music, and food.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the galleries in a festive, social atmosphere before returning to the tranquillity of Clico for the evening. Many of the area’s restaurants, including the sophisticated dining venues on Keyes, are also open late, making it a perfect night out.

Your Gateway to Rosebank’s Creative Heart

As the days grow shorter and the evenings cooler, there’s something uniquely appealing about exploring Rosebank’s world-class art scene. It’s a chance to engage with culture, have meaningful experiences, and take a moment to pause and reflect.

From the thought-provoking exhibitions at Gallery Momo to the dynamic energy of Keyes Art Night, the neighbourhood offers a cultural feast that is best enjoyed from the comfort and warmth of a stay at Clico.

We look forward to welcoming you back to your home in the heart of Joburg.
