A Cape Dutch Legacy
The Cape Dutch architectural style is one of South Africa’s most distinctive and beloved building traditions. Originating in the 17th century and adapted to suit local climatic conditions, these buildings are characterised by their elegant gables, whitewashed walls, and thatched roofs. Over the centuries, Cape Dutch architecture became more than just a building style, it evolved into a powerful symbol of heritage and identity.
Our building, now over 100 years old, stands as a beautiful example of this enduring architectural tradition. It’s a reminder of a bygone era, when craftsmanship and simplicity were paramount, and when homes were designed to harmonise with their surroundings.
Clico’s Journey: From Homestead to Boutique Hotel
The story of Clico began in 2006, when founder and owner Jeanette Schwegman discovered this charming property and envisioned a space that would cater to discerning, travel-weary guests. At the time, the building was a 70-year-old Cape Dutch homestead, already rich with history and character.
Schwegman was inspired to create an intimate, unpretentious establishment that would offer personalised attention and a true sense of home. The name “Clico” was inspired by her passion for champagne, specifically her favourite, Veuve Clicquot. It was a fitting name for a place that would come to embody elegance and celebration.
A Place of Warmth and Welcome
What truly makes Clico special, however, is not just its architecture or its name. It’s the people who bring it to life. The hotel was established with a deep commitment to the local community and to creating a workplace where staff are valued and empowered. Many team members have grown with the hotel, starting in entry-level positions and working their way up to management. This dedication and warmth are consistently reflected in the glowing feedback from guests, who often remark on the staff’s attentiveness, friendliness, and genuine care.

Today, Clico stands as a rare gem amidst Rosebank’s towering contemporary architecture. With only nine individually decorated rooms, it offers an intimacy and charm that larger hotels simply cannot replicate. It’s a place where heritage and modernity coexist, where the past is honoured and the present is savoured.
